How to Read a UAE Payslip and Check Your Salary

How to Read a UAE Payslip and Check Your Salary

If your salary credit is lower than expected, your payslip is the first document to check. A UAE payslip should help you understand your basic salary, allowances, deductions, and the amount due for that month.

But formats vary by employer, and an unexplained payroll label can make a simple check confusing. The most useful check is a three-way comparison between your employment contract, payslip, and actual payment.

Start with the pay period and employment rules before checking each salary component.

What to Check First on Your UAE Payslip

Confirm the Pay Period and Employer

Check that the statement belongs to you and covers the correct month. Look at your name, employee number, employer name, and payment date.

The pay period and payment date are different. A statement covering September may show a transfer made in October.

Also check whether this is a normal monthly payslip, an adjustment, or a final settlement. A final settlement can include unpaid salary, unused leave, and other amounts that need separate calculations.

If you joined recently, check the employment start date used by payroll.

Check Which Employment Rules Apply

This guide mainly concerns workers subject to the UAE federal private-sector labor law. DIFC, ADGM, government employment, domestic work, and other separately regulated arrangements can follow different rules.

For covered workers, MOHRE’s wage protection guidance confirms the right to receive wages on time and as agreed in the employment contract.

Your employer’s registration and governing employment system matter more than its office location alone. This is general information, not legal advice about an individual dispute.

Understand the Main Salary Components

Basic Pay and Allowances

Basic salary is the wage agreed in your contract. It’s separate from allowances and other benefits.

Your payslip may show housing, transport, food, telephone, or other allowances. These aren’t automatic entitlements for every employee. Check which ones your contract provides and whether they’re monthly cash payments or benefits supplied by your employer.

For example, employer-provided accommodation doesn’t necessarily mean a housing allowance should reach your bank account.

A package of AED 15,000 with AED 8,000 as the base amount leaves AED 7,000 in other components. Check how those components are described rather than assuming the whole package is basic pay.

Gross Salary, Extra Earnings, and Net Pay

Gross pay generally means earnings before any reductions. Depending on your employer’s format, it may include basic pay, payable allowances, overtime, commissions, and bonuses.

Some statements separate fixed monthly salary from variable earnings. Read the labels before comparing totals.

Overtime payments should match approved hours and the applicable calculation. Under the general federal rule, normal overtime carries at least 25% extra based on basic wage, subject to applicable exceptions.

The amount you receive is earnings minus deductions. It’s usually the amount you should receive, unless a reimbursement or other payment is transferred separately.

The UAE doesn’t levy personal income tax on employment income. Still, pension contributions or other lawful withholdings may apply depending on your circumstances.

Why Basic Wage Matters for Gratuity

Your basic wage affects more than the monthly breakdown. Under the ordinary statutory system, an eligible foreign full-time employee receives end-of-service gratuity based on their last basic wage.

The standard entitlement begins after one year of continuous service. It uses 21 days’ basic wage per year for the first five years, then 30 days per year after that.

Housing, transport, and similar allowances aren’t included in this calculation.

With AED 8,000 basic wage and exactly two eligible years, the calculation is:

AED 8,000 ÷ 30 × 21 × 2 = AED 11,200.

The calculation uses AED 8,000 even when the total monthly package is AED 15,000. Unpaid leave periods are excluded from the service calculation, and the statutory maximum is two years’ basic wage.

Different employment systems or approved alternative benefit arrangements may require a different calculation. Resigning doesn’t, by itself, reduce ordinary gratuity under the current federal framework.

Use the UAE gratuity calculator for an estimate, then check your service dates and applicable scheme.

Check Deductions and Leave Adjustments

Ask for the Reason Behind Every Deduction

A deduction needs a lawful basis. A vague entry such as “adjustment” or “other deduction” isn’t enough to explain why money was removed.

Article 25 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 permits deductions on listed grounds, with different conditions and limits.

Recovery of salary overpayments is capped at 20% of wage. Disciplinary deductions have a separate 5% limit and require the applicable procedures. Loan repayments require written consent and must not carry interest.

Where multiple deductions apply, the overall ceiling is 50% of wage.

The 50% ceiling doesn’t give an employer permission to make any deduction it chooses. Each deduction must still meet its own legal conditions.

Check the UAE salary deduction rules if payroll removes money for damage, fines, loans, or an earlier overpayment.

Separate Deductions from Partial-Month Pay

A lower payment can also come from joining mid-month, unpaid leave, or sick leave paid at a reduced rate under the applicable rules.

Ask payroll for the dates, number of days, salary basis, and calculation used. Don’t assume a daily rate used for one entitlement applies to every payroll calculation.

Paid annual leave salary and leave entitlements differ from payment for unused leave when employment ends, which follows the applicable framework and uses basic wage under the federal rules.

Also check attendance records. An approved leave day incorrectly recorded as unpaid absence can affect your salary.

Compare Your Contract, Payslip, and Bank Credit

Keep records for the same pay period together. Comparing different months can create a false mismatch.

  1. Compare basic salary and fixed allowances with your signed employment contract and any written salary amendment.
  2. Check overtime, commissions, bonuses, and leave adjustments against the relevant approvals and records.
  3. Add payable earnings, subtract deductions, and confirm that the result matches net pay.
  4. Compare the amount due with the salary credit in your bank statement or payroll-card transaction history.

Use the offer letter and contract checklist if the agreed salary breakdown changed between recruitment and employment.

For covered employers, the Wage Protection System (WPS) records salary transfers through approved payment channels. MOHRE’s WPS guidance explains the system’s wage-payment role.

MOHRE’s December 2025 WPS update introduced expanded digital salary-payment options. Whatever platform your employer uses, check the completed credit rather than relying only on a payroll notification.

A WPS transfer shows payment activity. It doesn’t, by itself, prove that every allowance, overtime amount, or deduction was correct.

If payment arrives in separate credits, total the relevant transfers. Keep reimbursements separate unless payroll confirms they form part of the payslip amount.

A Practical Monthly Payslip Checking Template

Record your monthly salary calculations in a spreadsheet and keep the supporting documents. This is a practical personal checklist, not a government-prescribed format or a template employers must use.

Payslip FieldWhat to Check
Employee and employer detailsCorrect person, employee number, and employing entity
Pay period and payment dateCorrect month and actual transfer date
Basic salaryMatches the contract or salary amendment
AllowancesAgreed amounts and payment frequency
Variable earningsOvertime, bonus, or commission basis
Leave or attendance adjustmentsCorrect dates, days, and calculation
Gross earningsPayable earnings add up correctly
Itemised deductionsReason, amount, approval, and applicable limit
Net payEarnings minus deductions
Payment referenceMatches the bank or payroll-card credit

The main requirement for your checking record is clarity. You should be able to trace each changed amount to a document or explanation.

Avoid saving unnecessary full bank-account or identity details in a shared spreadsheet.

What to Do When the Figures Don’t Match

Contact payroll or HR in writing. Include the pay month, disputed amount, and payslip entry you need explained.

A useful request is: “Please provide the calculation and reason for the deduction shown on my September payslip, including the dates and salary basis used.”

If payroll reports a rejected SIF file, ask them to check their normal payroll process. Request the rejection reason and expected resubmission date. The Salary Information File is used for WPS processing.

Ask payroll to verify employee identifiers, account or payroll-card details, pay period, and payment totals with its provider. These are practical checks, not universal official rejection codes.

Keep your contract, payslips, statements, attendance approvals, and correspondence outside your company email account.

For unresolved wage disputes, check the MOHRE salary complaint process if MOHRE is the responsible authority for your employment arrangement. Don’t sign confirmation of full payment unless the amount has reached you.

Salary slip format and how it differs from a salary certificate

Must Every Employer Provide the Same Payslip Format?

Payslip layouts vary by employer. Some use paper statements, while others provide PDFs or access through an HR portal.

There isn’t a single government-prescribed monthly payslip layout established by the official WPS guidance cited here. That guidance also doesn’t establish a standalone requirement to issue a particular paper or digital payslip.

Check the rules governing your employment and any contractual reporting arrangements. If the statement is missing or unclear, request an itemised monthly payroll breakdown in writing. Keep that request with your salary records.

Is a Payslip the Same as a Salary Certificate?

A payslip usually records earnings, deductions, and net pay for a particular period. A salary certificate is an employer-issued letter confirming employment and salary details for purposes such as a bank or visa application.

A certificate may show your agreed monthly salary without explaining that month’s overtime or deductions. It won’t replace your monthly payment check.

Use the UAE salary certificate guide when another organisation requests proof of income, and confirm which document it accepts.
